The 20-Minute Morning Reset
How a brief window of silence, light stretching, and screen-free coffee changed my approach to busy days.
For years, my morning started the same way: my alarm would sound, and within thirty seconds, I was scrolling. Before my feet even touched the floor, my brain was flooded with news headlines, work emails, and social media updates. I was starting my day in a reactive state, responding to the demands of the world before I had even checked in with myself.
I decided to run an experiment: a strict 20-minute screen-free window upon waking. No phone, no laptop, no notifications. This is how I spend those twenty minutes, and how it has completely shifted my creative energy.
Minute 0 to 5: Waking and Light stretching Instead of reaching for my phone, I immediately sit up, stretch my arms overhead, and take five deep breaths. I then do a simple forward fold, holding it for a minute to release tension in my lower back. I open the curtains to let natural light hit my eyes, which signals my circadian rhythm that it is time to wake up.
Minute 5 to 15: The Ritual of the Pour-Over I boil water and weigh out my coffee beans. I use a manual hand-grinder. The physical act of grinding the beans—the sound, the smell, the resistance—requires my presence. I pour the hot water slowly over the grounds, watching the coffee bloom. This ten-minute ritual is a form of meditation.
Minute 15 to 20: Five-Minute Journal I sit by the window with my mug and a blank notebook. I write three quick bullet points: - What I am feeling physically - One focus for the day ahead - One thing I am grateful for in this moment
This is not a long-form diary entry; it is a quick temperature check. Once the twenty minutes are up, I open my laptop. But the difference is that I enter the digital world on my own terms, grounded and calm.
